What mahr is, what it isn't, and how to set one that's serious but not theater. Auntie's guide for sisters and brothers.
Mahr has become two competing performances: the spiritual one ('I asked for a Quran') and the financial one ('the family will be embarrassed if it's under X'). Both are bad readings of the obligation.
What mahr actually is
It is a gift from the groom to the bride, hers absolutely, owed regardless of what the marriage becomes. It is not bridewealth. It is not a refund. It is hers.
How to think about the amount
- · It should mean something to him to give it.
- · It should be hers to do with as she wishes.
- · It should not be a number that strains him into resentment.
- · It should not be a number that signals her family's status more than her dignity.
Talk about it before nikah, not at it.
If the first time mahr is discussed is when the imam asks, you've already failed the test.
